Visit to Sikh Gurdwara

Year 3 went to visit the impressive Sikh Gurdwara in Newcastle as part of their Religious Studies programme.

They were greeted warmly by Cloud (not Sir or Mr, just Cloud!) who explained the rules about wearing a turban or similar (not a hat or cap) and to take off shoes and to wash. He then proceeded to offer everyone a drink and a biscuit, as it is the Sikh custom to offer food and drink to anyone who enters the Gurdwara. The children were shown round the large kitchen and saw all the donations that people had brought in. They entered the two main halls, Darbar Sahib, and looked around where the Guru Granth Sahib is kept. This was a great way to be introduced to Sikhism as a new topic.
